On Creative Making

I don’t really think of myself as an artist, as I’m not much for drawing (I can never get the proportions right), and don’t have good sculpting skills (results are consistently sad and floppy).  But I do still love to make beautiful things.  The alchemy of knitting, as I transform string into clothes; nurturing plants from shoot to leaf to flower; and the geometry of quilts, the cutting, planning and sewing.  I like to think of myself as more of a ‘maker’.

Right now, I’m almost done making my very first full size quilt, and am really proud with how it’s turned out.

I used a tutorial provided by Oh Fransson!, and there’s no way I could have done this without the pdf and accompanying blog posts.  I also got most of the fabric from Hawthorne Threads – their color matching tool is amazing in choosing coordinating prints.

It’s been so satisfying to see this come together and create something beautiful.  I urge all of you to find one creative outlet in the coming week.  For just 20 minutes, try to doodle pictures of your hand or your dog, arrange your plates more aesthetically in the cabinets, or sew something.  You’ve got 20 minutes for how rewarding this feels.

love, ktk
